Lydia Heflinger Howard Endowed Nursing Scholarship

Lydia Heflinger Howard Endowed Nursing Scholarship is awarded to undergraduate Nursing students in the Nursing program at Biola University. Recipients are selected by the Nursing Department based on the following criteria:

  • Commitment to Nursing
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA
  • US Citizen
  • Demonstrated Financial Need (by filing a FAFSA)

This scholarship is from a gift from Lydia Heflinger Howard who passed on May 15, 1996 at age 102. A scholarship Lydia received as a youth played a significant role in her life and she set up this scholarship in the hope of continuing to propagate the favorable influence the scholarship had on her.
She applied to USC, University of Southern California, and talked to the Dean about getting financial assistance. The Dean did find a way and the scholarship enabled Lydia to enter and complete college. This college education enabled Lydia to teach school, which she did for her entire career, first in a one room school in rural Oxnard and then teaching history in Los Angeles high schools. The scholarship changed her life and enabled her to be more useful to the community. Throughout her life Lydia maintained a strong Christian religious faith. She was especially involved in Bible study and emphasized the relevance to today’s life of the lessons taught in the Bible. This is why she selected Biola rather than USC for her endowment.
